Christian Tschumperlin was born in Switzerland August 12, 1833.  He was a German speaking Swiss immigrant to the United Sates when he enlisted as a private in the 9th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment company I in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on September 12, 1861. The 9th Wisconsin infantry was a unit of mostly German immigrants. He served in this regiment during the remainder of the War of the Rebellion (Civil War). He transferred to Company B on January 1, 1864. He mustered out on December 3, 1864.

Christian married Johanna Allers a Dutch immigrant on May 9, 1871. They purchased a farm and settled in Forest Prairie Township, Meeker County, Minnesota in 1882. He and Johanna had seven children: Fred 1872, Herbert 1873, Caroline 1876, Anna 1878, Joseph 1879, Mary Catherine 1882 and Charlie 1888. Christian was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic Frank Dagget Post Number 35 in Litchfield Minnesota. On May 10, 1884, he was authorized an Army pension. He died on October 24, 1906.  A detail of fellow Civil war veterans from the GAR Post rendered funeral honors at his burial. The GAR Post in Litchfield, Minnesota is now the Meeker County Museum.  Christian is listed in the GAR records at the museum. His wife Johanna received a widow's Army pension after Christian died, until her death on April 24, 1926.
