Recognizing Future Leaders

We have three programs that recognize future leaders: Eagle Scouts; Girl Scout Gold Award recipients; and Cadets, which is for deserving participants in Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC), Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC), National Defense Cadet Corps (NDCC), United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC), Civil Air Patrol (CAP), and Young Marines. Recipients need not be members of the SUVCW or any of the Allied Orders of the Grand Army of the Republic.

Eagle Scout Program

One of the many goals and purposes of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War is to recognize Scouts who achieve the rank of Eagle Scout with a special congratulatory letter and color Certificate of Commendation.  While we encourage any Scout searching for that special community service project to look to us for inspiration on projects relating to the Civil War, we offer this certificate with no “strings attached” other than being an Eagle Scout.

When possible, every effort is made by our members to present the certificate to the Scout at their Court of Honor, if invited to do so.

How to Order a Certificate

  1. Download certificate application (PDF) to your computer.
  2. Fill in the application in Adobe Reader electronically on your computer and save it.  Do not print out and fill in by hand.  NO handwritten application, letter or card will be accepted.
  3. Email the completed application as an e-mail attachment to the appropriate contact:

  • Eastern Washington Scouts:  camp3eagle@suvpnw.org
  • Northwestern Washington Scouts:  camp1eagle@suvpnw.org

ROTC / JROTC / NDCC / USNSCC / CAP / YM Award Program

The Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC), National Defense Cadet Corps (NDCC), United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC), Civil Air Patrol (CAP), and Young Marines are high school programs emphasizing citizenship, character development, leadership development and community service, preparing students for leadership roles while making them aware of their rights, responsibilities and privileges as American citizens.  The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War recognize deserving cadets in these programs.

The ROTC is a college program offered across the United States that prepares young adults to become officers in the U.S. Military.  The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War recognize deserving ROTC cadets.

The ROTC / JROTC / NDCC / USNSCC / CAP / YM Award consists of a certificate, full size medallion, and a service ribbon.  When possible, every effort is made by our members to present this award to the deserving cadet, if invited to do so.

The criteria for receiving our award: Our definition of a deserving cadet is one that “displays a high degree of patriotism to his or her Nation and has demonstrated a high degree of academic performance and leadership.”
